Collection: AFRICAN CICHLIDS
African cichlids are a diverse group of over 1,000 freshwater fish species, renowned for their vibrant, intense colors and high intelligence. Primarily originating from Africa's Rift Valley lakes (Malawi, Tanganyika, and Victoria), they thrive in hard, alkaline water (pH 8.1–8.5) and are known for their territorial, often aggressive, behavior and unique maternal mouthbrooding, where females protect fry in their mouths.
African cichlids are highly active, intelligent, and territorial. To manage their aggression, they are often kept in crowded, "overstocked" tanks with abundant hiding spaces like rocks and caves.
Many are specialized feeders, requiring a varied diet, with many being herbivorous algae grazers or insectivores.
